Record-breaking marathon through the Warnowtunnel

At the beginning of August, at the prime summer time, many athletes put on their best running shoes after weeks of hard training. The hella rostock marathon night calls Rostock citizens as well as national and international guests to the starting line.

It was to be a memorable evening on 3 August 2024. On the one hand, the event was completely dedicated to the Olympic Games in Paris. On the other hand, the organiser of the 22nd edition of the event ‘BMS Die Laufgesellschaft’ was proud to announce a record number of registrants in advance. The forecast was for sunshine and warm, but not too hot temperatures – perfect conditions for the runners. The route through the Warnowtunnel was one of the most unique marathon and half marathon courses in Germany.

A glance at the participants revealed that there were many amateurs as well as professionals. It wasn’t just about the best times, but often simply about taking part in a marathon or half marathon or even completing the full distance.

With a record number of 2,235 pre-registrations and 1,865 finishers, the event clearly topped last year’s figures. The fastest man over the 42-km distance was Christoph Weigel with a time of 2:40:39 h, the fastest woman Antonia Müller with a time of 3:07:55 h. The victory in the men’s half marathon even went to Rostock: Tom Gröschel completed the course in 1:08:22 h, while Susan Witte won the women’s race in 1:20:52 h. The route through the Warnowtunnel was a great variety for the runners, but also a real challenge, as the 3.5 % incline of the tunnel had to be completed twice.

The Warnowtunnel would like to thank the organisers ‘BMS Die Laufgesellschaft’ for the excellent organisation and congratulate all participants on their sporting triumph.
